Secure Attachment: What It Looks Like And How To Develop It

Adult attachment and interpersonal emotion regulation motives in daily life. Attachment-styles theory has strong empirical support, but it also has real limits worth understanding before applying it too rigidly. Measured week to week or month to month, far more movement shows up, because everyday relationship events can nudge a working model without overturning it. A specific relationship’s own history of responsiveness, or its absence, then revises that default for that one partner – exactly what a working-model account predicts. A global model can set the default expectation a person brings into a new relationship.

Evidence in the area suggests that these support figures do so by listening to their loved ones when they are upset and helping them in times of distress. People with earned security are likely less prone to mood disorders than if they didn’t improve upon their insecure attitudes and actions. If you’re struggling with healthy attachment, and your mental health and relationships are suffering, it’s time to seek professional help to learn how to develop a secure attachment style. Being in a relationship with a securely attached partner can also be particularly beneficial in fostering a more secure attachment style.

That does not necessarily mean that we have attachment issues, or that we will raise a child with such. Keep in mind that about two-thirds of children develop a secure attachment style. Children with a secure attachment style feel safe, valued, understood and comforted by their primary caregiver.

The Attachment Styles Quiz

Creating an intentional connection with those who you perceive as having a secure attachment style can help you observe secure behaviors. Those with a secure attachment style approach relationships with openness, confidence, and respect. “Hence, children model (imitate) secure attachment as well as receive it from their caregivers,” Peoples added. Now, let’s go back to the point of not breaking the child’s trust in you. The key here does not lie in the details, but rather in your general approach towards parenting. A small mistake, here and there, will not cause your child to become insecurely attached to you.

Secure Attachment – From Childhood To Adult Relationships

If you have determined that you were raised with an insecure attachment, know you can raise your child to be securely attached. Prioritize your child’s needs and practice the support you may wish you had yourself as a child. According to Ainsworth’s attachment theory, an attachment figure is often a child’s mother, but it can be any primary caregiver, such as a father figure, grandparent, sibling, or adopted caregiver.

As babies, they usually cry when their caregiver leaves but find comfort in their return. Insecure attachment styles include anxious, avoidant and disorganized. The goal is to move out of insecure attachment and into secure attachment.

He has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Psychology. Later meta-analytic evidence has narrowed this critique substantially. Temperament turns out to be largely unrelated to security overall. Where it does predict anything, it is mainly the resistant pattern specifically, not insecurity in general (Groh et al., 2017). Jerome Kagan argued that Strange Situation scores partly reflect an infant’s own inborn temperament rather than caregiving alone (Kagan et al., 1984). Research by Allan Schore (2001) suggests these emotional disconnections cause physiological stress comparable to physical separation.

The four-category model above builds on a landmark study that first applied Ainsworth’s infant styles to adult romantic love. Her team brought mothers and their infants into the lab and had them play in a room with toys on the floor and with various other adults coming in and out of the room. In 1969 and subsequent years, psychologist Mary Ainsworth and her colleagues ran experiments known as The Strange Situation that identified and observed attachment behaviors in children. “Learn to be assertive and set boundaries. Honor what you feel, and express your needs in words without manipulation and hidden meanings,” Suh says. “Securely attached people are often direct and appropriately confrontational to create a healthy and meaningful relationship.” They’re not afraid of intimacy, nor do they feel panicked when their partners need time or space away from them.

Grounding techniques, mindfulness, and self-soothing strategies can help you regulate your mind, body, and emotions when fears of abandonment or intimacy come up. When you respond to relationship stress from a more regulated state, you’re more likely to handle it in a way that promotes secure relationships. These become a significant source of support both during distress and during periods of goal achievement and exploration. Consistent interactions contribute to forming internal working models, shaping children’s views of themselves as lovable and competent and caregivers as reliable and trustworthy. When caregivers are reliably available and consistently responsive, children internalize this reliability, developing a secure sense of trust. Successful proximity seeking, reassurance, and comfort from caregivers help deactivate the attachment system, returning children to a calm and secure state.

Avoidant Attachment

Securely attached children show balanced behavioral strategies, expressing their need for both intimacy and autonomy. A securely attached child is like someone with a reliable phone signal. In addition, the child may be expected to help the parent with their own needs. The child may learn that it’s best to avoid bringing the parent into the picture. And since the child can’t rely on their parent to be there if they feel threatened, they might not easily move away from the parent to explore. Working on developing healthy social skills can help you shift towards or maintain a secure attachment style in your life. This can lead to happier relationships and deeper connections, ensuring positive mental health for you and your children. Attachment theory is a psychological theory developed by British psychologist John Bowlby that explains how humans form emotional bonds with others, particularly in the context of close relationships. Anxious and avoidant attachment styles look like codependency in relationships. They characterize the feelings and behavior of pursuers and distancers described in “Attachment Woes Between Anxious and Avoidant Partners” and Conquering Shame and Codependency. Each one is unconscious of their needs, which are expressed by the other.

A child forms a disorganized attachment style when they have a particularly difficult childhood filled with trauma, such as abuse. However, it’s possible to develop this attachment style even without trauma or abuse, depending on the individual. The child might see their primary caregiver as unpredictable or even scary. Because of this, they don’t see their caregiver as a source of comfort or safety.

I am a double board-certified Child, Adolescent, and Adult Psychiatrist. I received my undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and my medical degree from Ross University, completing all of my clinicals in Maryland, D.C., and NYC. I have participated in a variety of innovative academic clinical research and have presented research at annual national meetings of the American Psychiatric Association. Although my practice focuses on medication management, I also implement supportive therapy and motivational interviewing in sessions to allow for a more comprehensive approach to treatment. My clinical interests include depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic disorder, and ADHD. For most patients, Talkiatry treatment is just as effective as in-person psychiatry (American Psychiatric Association, 2021), and much more convenient.

These interactions register on an unconscious physiological level, even if the child isn’t consciously aware of the emotional disconnection. Such experiences shape a child’s future personality and emotional development. Many parent-child relationships have strong love but lack emotional attunement. In these non-attuned relationships, children may feel loved but not genuinely understood or appreciated for their true selves. If the caregivers are there to help soothe the child’s distress, they learn to see this as normal. When they grow up, they can use their caregiver’s actions as the template for managing their distress.

• This procedure provides important insights into how early interactions and caregiver responsiveness influence emotional development, shaping children’s expectations of relationships throughout life.
• A therapist can help you process relational trauma, understand where your attachment patterns come from, and guide you toward healthier relationship dynamics.
• It shows fear of strangers (stranger fear) and unhappiness when separated from a special person (separation anxiety).
• Adults with secure attachment are even well-liked in the workplace.

Secure attachment theory is well supported, but researchers have raised several important questions about what the evidence actually shows. This leads to push-pull behaviors and emotional turbulence in relationships. However, other researchers propose that people do not hold a single internal working model that applies to every relationship. When things go smoothly, attunement helps a child feel truly understood, accepted, and supported by their mom or caregiver. A caregiver can be very loving yet still mistime or misread a child’s cues, while a more reserved caregiver can respond accurately and reliably.

After achieving understanding and perspective, they can remember both their negative and positive experiences with more balance. By addressing any mental health conditions that occur alongside and contribute to your attachment struggles, you can learn how to improve your own well-being and form healthy relationships. Working with a qualified professional to control the symptoms of any mental health conditions can have a positive impact on your journey toward a secure attachment style. While your attachment style plays a powerful role in shaping your relationships, you aren’t assigned to any one type of attachment forever.

People with a secure attachment style are able to build and maintain healthy, meaningful, and lasting relationships. At the same time, they do not depend on their partner’s reassurance. Within the context of the relationship, they explore the world and grow in different ways, together with their partner. Secure attachment involves a reciprocal expression of feelings as well as sensitivity and responsiveness to the other’s needs.

Secure individuals are generally better at resolving conflicts, providing and receiving emotional support, and creating a foundation of trust and emotional security in their relationships. Those with disorganized attachment have mixed feelings about trust and intimacy. Anxious individuals often struggle with trust and intimacy in relationships. They have heightened fears of abandonment and rejection, leading to a constant need for reassurance from their partners. Securely attached individuals tend to be emotionally available to their partners.

Anxious attachment is also known as insecure resistant or anxious ambivalent. Their attachment system is prone to hyperactivation during times of stress, emotions can become amplified, and overdependence on others is increased (Mikulincer & Shaver, 2003). They are comfortable depending on others for help, and equally comfortable being depended on. They display a readiness to recall and discuss attachments that suggest much reflection regarding previous relationships. Secure attachment occurs because the mother meets the emotional needs of the infant.

Romantic partners function as attachment figures and can become a source of comfort and felt security for the other member of the relationship. John Bowlby argued that one’s sense of security as a child is critical to their attachment style as an adult. However, certain stressful circumstances can cause caregivers to be emotionally distant, even if physically present. This condition of being physically close but emotionally separated is called “proximate separation.” It still hurts. Interactional synchrony focuses on coordinating nonverbal behaviors during social interactions, while emotional attunement is about the empathetic understanding and response to another person’s emotions.

In anxious attachment, the child can’t rely on their parents to be there when needed. Because of this, the child may fail to develop any feelings of security from the attachment figure. Research has shown insecure attachment can be a contributor to mental illness as an adult, leading to conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, among other issues. Insecure attachment also often leads to low self-esteem, challenges with intimacy, and an inability to trust others as an adult. In the early months and years of your child’s life, nonverbal communication is a foundational part of the connection you form with your child. While quality care is important, being a perfect parent is not what makes or breaks a secure attachment.

Attachment types develop early in life and often remain stable over time. However, this does not mean that they cannot be changed into more secure forms of attachment–it just means that you may need to develop self-awareness through understanding and resolving attachment issues. The first step of this process is to learn how insecure attachment develops and influences thoughts and actions within the important relationships in our lives. The bond you form with your child during their first 18 months can have a profound impact on the way they navigate relationships later in life.

And it was the description of a so-called fearful-avoidant – one of the four attachment styles – which felt strikingly familiar. Discovery of an insecure-disorganized/disoriented attachment pattern. Fraley, Gillath, and Deboeck (2021) followed adults naturalistically to test whether major life events produce lasting shifts in attachment style. Researchers focus on the Attachment Behavioral System; this refers to an innate psychological program that drives infants to seek proximity to caregivers during times of perceived threat. Additionally, the same study also found that dismissive adults were often parents to avoidant infants. People tend to base their parenting style on the internal working model, so the attachment type tends to be passed on through generations of a family.
