Steroids for asthma

A few products do not have a marketing authorisation (licence) as a medicine and therefore there is no PIL.

• Steroid creams are safe to use during pregnancy, but if you’re breastfeeding you’ll need to make sure any cream is wiped off before feeding.
• Discuss this with your health professional if you’re concerned.
• You might have a burning or tingling sensation around your bottom during a steroid injection into a vein (intravenous).
• When ingested through anabolic steroids, the hormone can increase muscle mass, decrease fat and act as a performance-enhancing drug, but it can also cause several undesirable effects.
• These long-term diseases affect different parts of the body and can be debilitating.
• It occurs because cortisol causes fat to be redistributed to these areas.

In competitive sport, most organisations ban anabolic steroid use and test competitors for these performance-enhancing drugs. This is because when you’re on high doses of steroids your body may stop producing enough of its own natural steroids to help illness or injury. This means that doctors will need to give you extra corticosteroids.

Do not suddenly stop taking steroids

It is also illegal to supply or sell them, and you can serve up to 14 years in prison if you do. You can usually drink alcohol while taking steroid tablets, but don’t drink too much as this may irritate your stomach. They may also sometimes recommend other medicines to take alongside steroids to protect you from some of the side effects, such as medicines to help prevent indigestion or heartburn. This is an internationally agreed protocol for managing patients with DMD on regular steroids during periods of illness, trauma or stress including surgery.

• Symptoms of an infection include a change in temperature, aching muscles, headaches, feeling cold and shivery and generally unwell.
• The process of rapidly building muscle and gaining weight (‘bulking’) followed by rapidly losing body fat and weight to become lean (‘cutting’) should also be avoided.
• If you normally wear contact lenses, you might need to avoid wearing these while having treatment with steroid eye drops.
• This means they can only legally be sold by pharmacists with a prescription.

This means your body has problems making enough of a hormone called cortisol. Having this problem can affect your body’s ability to cope with stress. This might be from an infection, surgery or injury for example.

Anticonvulsants are medicines used to prevent seizures (fits). Steroid injections are often only given at intervals of at least 6 weeks. A maximum of 3 injections into one area is usually recommended.

Many people, therefore, make more effort to get regular exercise and follow a healthy, balanced diet as they get older. Eat slowly and you’ll have a better chance of avoiding that over-stuffed feeling. At home, serve yourself a smaller portion and think about whether you really want a second helping. If you’re worried about your weight, take part in more daily physical activity – try walking to work, on the school run or to the shops and spend less time in front of the TV or computer.
